Highlights You Won't Want to Miss This Winter
Mackay Show
16–18 June 2026: Mackay Showgrounds
If you’re in town in June, the Mackay Show is hard to miss.
It’s three days of everything a classic country show should be. Think show rides lighting up the grounds, the smell of food stalls in the air, livestock competitions, pavilion displays and that steady buzz of people moving from one thing to the next.
During the day, it’s all about wandering through exhibits, checking out local produce and watching competitions unfold. Then as the sun drops, the whole place shifts. The lights come on, the crowd builds, and the atmosphere really kicks in, with evening entertainment and fireworks bringing it all together.
Pioneer Valley Show
June 2026: Pioneer Valley
Short, sharp and full of life, the Pioneer Valley Show packs a lot into one day.
Often described as the best one-dayer in the state, it’s the kind of event where everything feels close, connected and easy to take in. You’ll find show rides, local exhibits, food stalls and competitions, all brought together with a strong sense of community spirit.
It might only run for a day, but oh what a day it is.
Mackay Festival of Arts
1 July – 9 August 2026: Across the region

The Mackay Festival of Arts brings a different kind of energy to winter.
Across several weeks, the region fills with performances, installations and events that pop up in all kinds of spaces, from theatres and galleries to outdoor stages and open-air settings. It’s creative, a little unexpected, and always worth exploring, even if you don’t have a set plan.
Some nights might lead you to live music or a theatre show, others to something more immersive or visual. It’s the kind of festival where you can dip in for a single event or build a whole trip around it.
A Night in the Canefields (Oh Deere Farm Stay)
2 August 2026: Calen

This one’s a little different, in the best way.
At A Night in the Canefields, you’ll find yourself surrounded by sugarcane fields as the sun drops and the evening begins to build. Live music sets the tone, food and local flavours bring people together, and as the night rolls on, the main event takes over.
A real cane fire lights up the landscape, creating a moment that feels both powerful and uniquely tied to the region. It’s not something you see every day, and that’s exactly what makes it special.
International Test Cricket
22-26 August 2026: Great Barrier Reef Arena, Mackay

There’s something special about watching Test cricket in a regional city.
In August 2026, Mackay will host its first ever international Test match as Australia takes on Bangladesh at Great Barrier Reef Arena. Across five days, the city will settle into the rhythm of the game, with the atmosphere building session by session with every big wicket and boundary.
Whether you follow every ball or simply want to experience the atmosphere, it’s the kind of event that brings people together and one that you can make a holiday out of.
Middlemount Race Day
25 July 2026: Middlemount

Round up your crew and head trackside for Middlemount Race Day.
It’s a full day of racing, good company and that classic country race day atmosphere. You’ll see people dressed up for the occasion, groups settling in for the afternoon, and plenty happening both on and off the track.
Between races, there’s time to catch up, grab a drink and soak in the energy of the day. And then there’s the fan favourite…the Dachshund Dash, which brings a whole new level of fun to the event.
St Lawrence Bush Ball
6 June 2026: St Lawrence
Dust off the boots and settle in for a proper country night out at the St Lawrence Bush Ball.
Held inside the St Lawrence Centenary Hall, this much-loved community event brings together live music, dancing and that relaxed small-town atmosphere that makes nights like this memorable. It’s equal parts celebration and catch-up, with locals and visitors all welcomed onto the dancefloor.
St Lawrence Wetlands Festival
2-5 July 2026: St Lawrence

For a small town, St Lawrence knows how to put on a memorable weekend.
The St Lawrence Wetlands Festival brings together nature, birdlife, and classic country hospitality in one of the region’s most unique coastal landscapes. It’s the kind of event where mornings start early spotting kangaroos and migratory birds, and afternoons slow down with live music, local food and stories shared between locals and visitors alike.
This is a weekend with easygoing charm that keeps people coming back year after year.
