Here’s what each season brings across our unique coastal, rainforest and inland landscapes, noting the weather along the coast can often be very different to what’s happening out west.
Summer (December – February)
Tropical, lush and full of life
Summer in the Mackay Isaac Region is warm, humid, and alive with colour. Expect hot days, warm nights, and short tropical storms that breathe life into our waterfalls and rainforests.
- Average temps: 24°C – 31°C
- Best for: Waterfalls, swimming holes, island escapes, early morning beach walks
- Top tips: Pack light, breathable clothing and don’t forget insect repellent and sunscreen. Afternoon storms are common—perfect for dramatic skies and lush landscapes.
Autumn (March – May)
Mild, calm and ideal for outdoor adventures
Autumn brings slightly cooler temperatures, low humidity and crystal-clear skies—making it one of the best seasons to explore the region’s walking trails, national parks and inland regions.
- Average temps: 19°C – 29°C
- Best for: Bushwalking, camping, mountain views, wildlife spotting
- Top tips: Perfect for photography and scenic drives inland. It’s also a great time to spot platypus at Broken River or camp beside Lake Elphinstone.
Winter (June – August)
Clear, dry days and cool, starry nights
Our winters are dry, sunny and pleasantly cool—ideal for travellers looking to avoid the chill of southern states. Inland regions experience crisp mornings and nights, while the coast remains mild.
- Average temps: 12°C – 25°C
- Best for: Whale watching, 4WD road trips, outback sunsets, campfires
- Top tips: Pack layers for inland towns like Clermont and Moranbah, especially if camping. Coastal areas like Clairview and Cape Hillsborough remain mild and ideal for outdoor fun.
Spring (September – November)
Warm, colourful and full of wildlife activity
Spring is a vibrant time to visit—temperatures rise, wildflowers bloom, and wildlife becomes more active. Expect longer days, warm waters and clear skies.
- Average temps: 18°C – 30°C
- Best for: Snorkelling, reef and island adventures, birdwatching
- Top tips: Visit St Lawrence Wetlands in early spring for incredible birdlife. It’s also a great time for road trips before the summer humidity sets in.
