AFC Media Release - AFC 16 & IFS Trans Tasman Cup

This week the Mackay Region hosted the inaugural IFS Trans Tasman Cup and the Australian Fishing Championships Series 16.

The IFS Trans Tasman Cup was a head to head format held at Eungella Dam targeting the powerful Sooty Grunter. Team Australia were represented by Brisbane’s Tristan Taylor, with Charles Smith from Timaru representing Team New Zealand. Eungella’s beautiful backdrop offered the ultimate level playing field and both teams had to adapt to a new waterway and species, in order to bring home the glory. Smith from New Zealand kept Team Australian on edge with a highlight reel 48cm Sooty early in the session. In the end Taylor and Australia prevailed with a monster 51cm Sooty to complete his bag.

Both Teams were humbled by their surroundings and stated it was the ultimate arena for the Cup to be held. Smith was in awe of the experience vowing to return to the Mackay Region with friends to take advantage of the idyllic fishing mecca. Watch out for all the action, free to air in Easter 2020.

AFC 16 featured two time defending champions Team BCF represented by Liam Carruthers and rookie Mark Healey against Team Jack Links’ Mitchell Cone and Matthew Langford.

The first round was held at Eungella Dam, where both teams took advantage of great fishing conditions and scored at regular intervals targeting Sooty Grunter. 50cm plus Sooties were the highlights of the session.

The second and final round was held at the world class Kinchant Dam and the focus was Australia’s iconic Barramundi. The Series went down to the wire with both teams rising to the challenge Kinchant and the mighty Barra served up. Carruthers a 2 time AFC Champion praised the region saying, “the Mackay Region is so unique that it provides such contrasting species and perfect waterways to hold the Championships.” The series will be broadcast free to air in Easter 2020.
