Summer (December – February)
Summer brings warm, humid days and tropical rain showers that transform the rainforests and waterfalls into lush green wonderlands. Expect higher rainfall, afternoon storms and plenty of life in the creeks and dams—perfect for those who love chasing waterfalls or soaking up the vibrant green of the region’s landscapes. Average temperatures range from 24°C to 31°C.
Top tips: Pack light, breathable clothing and don’t forget insect repellent and sunscreen. Afternoon storms are common—perfect for dramatic skies and lush landscapes.
Autumn (March – May)
Autumn is one of the most comfortable seasons to explore, with lower humidity, clear skies and warm, sunny days. It’s ideal for hiking, mountain biking and fishing, as the weather is settled and the waterways are still flowing strong from the summer rains. Average daytime temperatures sit around 18°C to 28°C.
Top tips: Perfect for photography and scenic drives inland. It’s also a great time to spot platypus at Broken River or camp beside Lake Elphinstone.
Winter (June – August)
Winter in the Mackay Isaac Region is mild and dry, with crisp mornings, clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine. It’s prime time for camping, inland road trips and coastal whale watching. Average temperatures range from 13°C to 23°C—cool enough for cosy campfires, but warm enough for daytime adventures.
Top tips: Visit St Lawrence Wetlands in early spring for incredible birdlife. It’s also a great time for road trips before the summer humidity sets in.
Spring (September - November)
Spring is all about new life and bright colours. Inland, wildflowers bloom and the outback begins to glow with golden light. Coastal waters are calm and perfect for snorkelling, boating or an early beach swim. With daytime temperatures between 20°C and 30°C, it’s an excellent season for bushwalking, fishing and road trips before the summer heat returns.
