AFC to air from Mackay
The Mackay Region, as Australia’s premier fishing destination, will be showcased across the country this weekend, as the Australian Fishing Championship (AFC) is broadcast on 10 Bold at 5pm on Saturday 6 April, and encored at 6:30am, Sunday 13 April on Channel Ten and at 12:30pm on 10 Bold.
In addition to being broadcast in Australia, the AFC Series is broadcast into 4 languages across 16 markets including China, Japan and South Korea.
Featuring six of Australia’s best tournament anglers, AFC XV was hosted across The Mackay Region’s incredible fishing impoundments. Qualifying rounds began at Eungella Dam, widely regarded as one of Australia’s best sooty grunter fisheries. The top two teams then moved down the Pioneer Valley to Teemburra Dam, to target the iconic barramundi in the grand final.
Tune in this Saturday and join the emotional ride of AFC rookies, Mitchell Cone and Matthew Langford from Team Jack Links, taking on defending champions Dean Silvester and Liam Carruthers from Team BCF, and the highly accomplished Mackay local Daniel Grech and Victorian Warren Carter from Team Firefly.
Daniel Grech said he was proud to represent The Mackay Region in AFC XV and showcase the region’s fishing destinations.
“The Mackay Region was the perfect host for AFC XV. Nowhere else in the world can you target sooty grunter and barramundi across three impoundments, salmon and flathead from the rivers and beaches, or saltwater pelagic species, all within a 90-minute drive,” he said.
“AFC brings together Australia’s best tournament anglers and to go against them in my own backyard was a very special moment,” said Mr Grech.
Mr Grech continued, “I hope people can tune in to witness the AFC anglers fish our premier impoundments, and I’m confident the broadcast will inspire fishing enthusiasts to travel to The Mackay Region to experience this incredible destination.”
General Manager of Mackay Tourism echoed Mr Grech’s praise for The Mackay Region’s fishing experiences.
“Major fishing events like AFC are crucial in marketing The Mackay Region as a desired destination for fishing enthusiasts,” he said.
Mr Webber said, “approximately five per cent of our almost one million visitors a year, choose Mackay for its fishing. This equates to a significant investment into the regional economy.”
He continued, “with the busy winter season approaching, and AFC being broadcast across the Ten Network, I’m expecting to see a lot of new visitors, with fishing rod or boat in tow, to journey to The Mackay Region.”
