Winter Warmed up for Tourism Operators

Locals may have felt the cold, but The Mackay Region’s tropical climate proved a major drawcard for thousands of our southern neighbours this winter.

Tourism operators from across the region have reported a surge in visitor numbers, in what has been a significant boost to the local economy.

Reports of strong bookings from the accommodation, tour and retail industries looks to set to build visitation growth upon growth for The Mackay Region.

John Young, General Manager of Big4 Mackay Blacks Beach Holiday Park, was one such operator who reported a successful winter season.

“Winter is normally a busy season for us, with Mackay a popular destination for the Grey Nomad market. This winter has far exceeded our own expectations, with the season starting earlier and finishing later this season,

“Many of our guests have sought out The Mackay Region as their preferred holiday destination because of our tropical climate, and untouched natural experiences”.

Mr. Young continued “These bookings demonstrate that our region is evolving as a tourism destination and I see no reason why we can’t continue this growth”.

Tour operators have also noticed a substantial rise in bookings during the Winter months. Jason Kidd from Inshore Fishing Mackay has been kept busy taking visitors out to experience Mackay’s premier fishing.

“Mackay’s fantastic winter weather means there’s always great fishing options available”.

“This combined with the influx of holiday makers from across Australia and overseas, has helped my business thrive” continued Mr Kidd.

“Fishing charter bookings are up 40 per cent from last year, and I’ve taken clients fishing 38 of the last 39 days”.

“It’s a wonderful feeling enabling a visitor to catch their dream fish. There’s been some impressive fish caught this winter, and each one caught becomes a treasured holiday moment” said Mr Kidd.

A bumper winter season has been welcomed by Mackay Tourism, who went to market in February with a marketing campaign to lure visitors north this winter.

General Manager of Mackay Tourism, Tas Webber, stated “strong winter bookings reflect successful destination marketing for the region, Council and stakeholder investment and attractive product offerings from industry”.

Mr Webber also noted to benefits this successful tourism season will mean to Mackay and Isaac Region locals. “More visitors to the region, means with it more expenditure, and ultimately more jobs”.

“Tourism is establishing itself as a key pillar to our region’s economy and a buoyant tourism industry brings benefits across the community” he said.

Looking ahead, Mackay Tourism is set to launch its Summer Campaign, which will be aim to entice families to visit the region over the summer period.
