Barra season brings anglers out in force
Mackay is joining other Queensland regions in celebrating the start of the barramundi season today, which runs from midday 1 February to midday 1 November.
Inshore Fishing Mackay’s Jason Kidd, who began operating a commercial inshore fishing charter in 2017, said barramundi will now be the target of many anglers over the next few months.
“The start of the season is a big event with plenty of hard core fisho’s hanging out for the day.”
“Unfortunately the tides this year are massive on opening day so anglers may need to wait a few days until conditions are a bit better – but this won’t stop a lot of us from trying!”
Jason said there were many places to catch barramundi in Mackay.
“They can be caught on any part of our coastline; any creek, rock bar or mud flat at the right time can also work.”
The Mackay Region has the highest fishing participation rate in the State, and is well-known for its metre-long barramundi catches.
It is also one of only three locations in Queensland with a net-free fishing zone (St Helens Beach to Cape Hillsborough).
Mackay Regional Council Deputy Mayor, Cr Amanda Camm said Council and Mackay Tourism were working together on the Mackay Recreational Fishing Strategy to create opportunities for Mackay to be one of Queensland and Australia’s premier recreational fishing destinations, offering superb fishing 365 days of the year.
“Fishing is extremely popular among locals here in Mackay, and we are seeing an increased demand and opportunity for fishing tourism,” Cr Camm said.
“We have held some of Australia’s biggest fishing competitions at our dams over the last few years, and we are becoming well-known as a fishing destination for both the core fishing market and the holiday and leisure markets.”
