Borders reopen to Sydney and Victoria in time for school holidays

The Mackay Region’s tourism industry is set to benefit from the recent announcement that Queensland’s borders will open to Greater Sydney and Victoria next week (Tuesday, 1 December), subject to no new cases of community transmission.

Mackay Tourism CEO Tas Webber said it is a welcome announcement for tourism providers and the Mackay Airport.

“The announcement has come at the perfect time, as we gear up for a busy school holiday period and inject much needed support into our tourism industry,” said Mr Webber.

“Mackay locals will have the opportunity to welcome family and friends from across the border and show them why The Mackay Region is such a great place to visit and live.”

Head of Aviation at North Queensland Airports Garry Porter said the announcement provided certainty for visitors over the holiday period and supported the ongoing recovery of aviation to the region.

“This will allow us to maintain capacity into Mackay as the resources sector shuts down over the summer holidays and it will be a great opportunity for family and friends to reunite,” said Mr Porter.

“Mackay Airport has been operating at around 55 percent of pre COVID capacity and with Sydneysiders now able to visit we’ll see this continue.”

The easing of restrictions will complement Mackay Tourism’s current summer campaign aimed at the VFR (Visiting Friends & Relatives) market. The campaign #Choose Your Adventure offers visitors great deals from local tourism providers, 24-hour day itineraries, and the chance to win a holiday.
