Continued Growth focus of Tourism AGM

Mackay Tourism held its 2018 Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Ocean International Hotel on Thursday, 25 October. The AGM highlighted the successful year for Mackay Tourism and tourism operators across the region, with renewed confidence for the year ahead.

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson and Mackay Tourism Chair Rob Porter both spoke at the event, reinforcing the achievements of the tourism industry, and thanking the Mackay Tourism Board, staff, volunteers, and members for their efforts.

General Manager of Mackay Tourism, Tas Webber, also spoke of the advances tourism has made in establishing itself as a key pillar to The Mackay Region’s economy.

“Tourism has become a major contributor to Mackay’s economy, with $380 million a year in investment and 3,700 people employed in the tourism industry, according to the latest Tourism Research Australia Satellite Account data”, said Mr Webber.

Mr Webber wished to thank the three resigning Board Members, Col Adamson, Kelly Davidson and Brayden Matheson for their service.

“The dedication for growing tourism and supporting local businesses has been a hallmark of our Board. I would like to thank the resigning Board members, particularly Col Adamson who has served our industry for 15 years”.

Nick uit den Bogaard and Luana Royle were reelected to the Board, along with new members Matt Cielens from Harrup Park, Nigel Irving from the Daily Mercury, and Nic Willis of Extrastaff.

“Congratulations to our new and returning Board members, I am looking forward to working closely with the 2018-19 Mackay Tourism Board. With their skills, and commitment, I am confident of more success in the year to come” said Mr Webber.

The AGM also saw the distribution of the 2017-18 Mackay Tourism Annual Report.

The Annual Report demonstrated several significant achievements for Mackay Tourism, highlighted by increases visitor numbers, nights and expenditure with seven successive quarters of visitor growth recorded.

Mackay Tourism grew the Mackay Region branding with seven marketing campaigns throughout the year, and secured a record $4.2 million in media value - a 61 per cent increase.

Mackay Tourism’s social media accounts also flourished this year with more than 23,000 followers across its Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram pages.

A 3.6% increase in Mackay Tourism revenue was also recorded.

Looking to the year ahead Mr. Webber said, “I see no reason why Mackay can’t continue to be home to a strong and resilient tourism industry”.
