Glenden

A modern mining town established in 1981 by the Mount Isa Mines, may resemble many of Queensland's coal towns at first glance.

Glenden, in the Isaac region is a modern mining town established in 1981 by the Mount Isa Mines, may resemble many of Queensland's coal towns at first glance — but a closer look reveals a community thoughtfully designed with innovation in mind. Uniquely, Glenden was built without any cross intersections, and all essential services including water, power and telecommunications are placed completely underground, creating a cleaner and safer streetscape. It was also the first mining town in Queensland specifically designed to accommodate people with disabilities.

Glenden is a welcoming stop for travellers, offering groceries, fuel, supplies, great coffee and convenient dining options. Before heading off to explore the Isaac region, visitors can also take advantage of the town's potable water supply and dump point facilities — particularly handy as some nearby areas do not provide safe drinking water.
