Industry Committed to Environmental Sustainability
The Mackay Region’s tourism industry has become an illustration of environmental sustainability thanks to several recent developments.
Pioneering environmentally sustainable tourism in The Mackay Region has been The Shores Holiday Apartments and Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park, who have both been achieved Nature Tourism Certification from Ecotourism Australia.
Eco Certified Nature Tourism operators are reconginised for providing a tourism product or service in natural areas that leave a minimal impact on the environment.
A world’s first program, Ecotourism Australia developed ECO Certification, to assure travelers that certified products are backed by a commitment to sustainable practices and high quality nature-based tourism experiences.
Kerryn Beck, Co Owner and Manager of The Shores Holiday Apartments, said Eco Certification demonstrated their businesses commitment to environmental sustainability.
“The team at The Shores are overjoyed with being recognised for their Eco Certified Nature Tourism status" said Kerryn.
“Located at stunning Blacks Beach, The Shores has always valued, to the upmost importance, but in an unobtrusive manner, our environmental sustainability”.
“Our beachfront location also provides our guests with the opportunity to get close to nature whilst staying in a residential suburb. By obtaining our Eco Certification we just wanted to show that being environmentally aware and applying best practice principals of sustainability can be achieved in a traditional accommodation property."
Kerryn continued “The Shores Holiday Apartments also works with Mackay Regional Council on the protection and awareness of the local migratory shore birds, and flat-back turtles that nest on Blacks Beach”.
“Wehave just established our Containers for Change initiative where all the funds raised by this recycling program at The Shores are donated to Mackay and District Turtle Watch Association to help them protect the endangered Flat back Turtles that nest on our beaches”, said Kerryn.
General Manager of Mackay Tourism, Tas Webber, congratulated Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park and The Shores Holiday Park on receiving Eco Certification.
Mr. Webber said these credentials were an example of the efforts of Mackay’s tourism industry to preserve its natural assets.
“Mackay Tourism, and its members, are committed to sustaining our regions abundance of natural assets and wildlife encounters”.
Mr. Webber said, “Mackay Tourism has helped to sustain and manage our wallabies on the beach experience with the Cape Hillsborough Sunrise with the Wallabies Tours”.
“Mackay Tourism has also produced environmentally friendly keep-cups, metal straws and reusable shopping bags”, he said.
These environmentally friendly items are available for purchase at the Mackay Region Visitor Information Centre at Sarina, and the Mackay Visitor Information Centre at City Gates.
