Mackay Exhibited in Popular Travel Magazines

Three widely read travel magazines have showcased the spectacular natural beauty of The Mackay Region in their latest publications.

The Mackay Region has been stunningly displayed in the latest issue of the Australian Geographic magazine. In September and October last year, Mackay Tourism hosted Australian Geographic journalist Hannah James and photographer Don Fuchs on a three-week journey throughout the region.

A part of this trip was the four-day Mackay Highlands Great Walk. Thoroughly detailed, and beautifully illustrated, the seven-page article showcases this incredible hike that passes through the vibrant rainforest and dry eucalyptus ecosystems between Moonlight Dam and Eungella.

The January-February issue of Australian Geographic magazine is available online and from local newsagents. The March-April issue is expected to feature a story on the Cosgrove Hotspot, a chain of ancient volcanoes that start at Cape Hillsborough, pass through the Isaac region and continue all the way to Victoria.

Promotion of The Mackay Region has also extended overseas, with the iconic Cape Hillsborough Sunrise with the Wallaby Experience presenting a six-page Queensland feature in popular German women’s magazine FUER SIE. The article ‘Australia: Between Dream and Adventure’ will be read by approximately 270,000 Germans generating a media value of $306,000.

Also taking off across the country, and sure to inspire thousands of travellers was the January issue of the Virgin Australia inflight magazine. The January issue was headlined by a Twenty for 2020 feature, showcasing twenty Australian destinations that are a must-visit for travellers.

Number 16 on the list is none other than our very own Mackay Region, visualised by a magnificent sunset at Cape Hillsborough. Mackay is specifically chosen for its credentials as a family travel destination.

Holidays with Kids editor Aleney de Winter is quoted in the magazine advocating for the natural experiences for The Mackay Region.

“Often overlooked for its glamourous northern neighbours, QLD’s Mackay region is the living embodiment of a David Attenborough doco, with wildlife-crammed rainforests, fish-filled reefs and extraordinary beaches without the crowds. Where else in Australia can you spot whales during the migration season, kayak through a dugong sanctuary, stroll through giant boulder-scattered rainforests, take a dip in a natural swimming hole, enjoy sunrise with wallabies, snorkel with turtles and play I Spy with platypus, all in the one place?”, she said.

The Virgin Australia Inflight Magazine is available on all Virgin domestic flights and on the Virgin Australia website.

Chief Executive Officer of Mackay Tourism Tas Webber explained the significance of the region featuring in such renowned magazines.

“Nationally and internationally read and respected magazines, like these three featuring The Mackay Region, generate significant interest from key target markets,” he said.

Mr Webber continued, “greater publicising of the region has been crucial in cementing The Mackay Region onto people’s must-visit lists and I expect these recent magazine features will equate to even more interest, visitors and expenditure into Mackay.”

Local tourism operators look set to benefit from Mackay’s national and international exposure, as Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park Owner Renae Atherton explained.

“Our tourist park welcomes guests from around Australia and the world. A significant number of our guests have seen Mackay Region content, be it in publications, online or on social media and been inspired to experience our slice of paradise for themselves,” she said.

“Cape Hillsborough, and the wider Mackay Region, offer the quintessential Australian holiday, abounds in stunning scenery and wildlife experiences. It is this wealth in imagery that makes our destinations leap out from the page to captivate the reader and inspire them to visit.”
