Mackay Represented at Australian Tourism Exchange

The Mackay Region is being showcased to the world this week with Mackay Tourism sending a delegation to the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) in Perth.

ATE is Australia’s largest annual travel and tourism business-to-business event, bringing together tourism businesses, tourism wholesalers, media and travel writers from around the world.

The event centres around business meetings, and networking events designed to provide international travel buyers with the opportunity to experience Australia’s tourism offering first-hand through pre and post event familiarisations.

The Mackay Region will be showcased to approximately 650 key buyer delegates from over 30 countries.

Earlier in the week, Mackay Tourism met with 19 media representatives, providing opportunities for the region to be featured in travel magazines, newspapers, and across social media in countries including Germany, New Zealand and the United States.

Leading the Mackay Tourism delegation is General Manager Tas Webber, who highlighted the benefits of attending ATE.

“ATE is an important event for tourism destinations like The Mackay Region, as it puts our unique offering of nature reserved experiences in front of some of the world’s most influential travel companies and writers,” he said.

“International Visitor Survey data found that for 2018, 56,000 international visitors injected $18.9 million into the region’s economy, or about $50,000 a day, representing a substantial investment and source of sustainable job creation,” said Mr Webber.

He continued, “a common theme from meetings with international media and retailers so far, has been one of strong interest in The Mackay Region, in particular our iconic wildlife encounters such as the platypus of Eungella, or the Cape Hillsborough wallaby experience. Mackay is being recognised as an untouched gem, just waiting to be explored.”

Mr Webber also said, “The Mackay Region has the natural assets to continue to develop as a desired destination for international visitors, and a strong presence at ATE will further bolster this interest in our region from key source markets.”
