More Visitors Staying Longer in Mackay
Tourism is continuing to establish itself as a leading contributor to The Mackay Region economy following National Visitor Survey data released today for year ending June 2018.
For the seventh successive quarter, The Mackay Region recorded an increase in domestic visitation with 898,000 visitors to the region for year ending June 2018 – an increase of 1.7 per cent year on year.
Mackay’s growing popularity as a tourism destination was reflected in a substantial increase of 9.4 per cent in domestic overnight expenditure from the previous year. $415.8 million was injected into The Mackay Region economy from domestic visitors, creating jobs and growth throughout the community.
The region’s growing list of natural and cultural attractions, an exciting events calendar, and great array of accommodation options, culminated in a considerable increase in average length of stay.
Domestic visitors to The Mackay Region now spend an average of 4.7 nights in the region, up nearly a full night. As a result, domestic visitors spent a record 4.2 million nights in the region for year ending June 2018 – an increase of 25.2 per cent.
Mackay Tourism General Manager, Tas Webber, welcomed the latest National Visitor Survey figures released by Tourism Research Australia.
“Seven successive quarters of domestic visitation growth is a major achievement for Mackay’s tourism industry. The continued increases in expenditure demonstrate the value tourism is making to our local economy”.
Mr. Webber continued “The Mackay Region is continuing to develop as a significant tourism destination and with continued investment and marketing, our Wallabies of Cape Hillsborough, Platypus of Eungella and Barramundi of Kinchant Dam will feature ever more prominently in people’s holiday plans”.
Mackay Tourism will be looking to continue strong visitation growth with the launch today of a new marketing campaign, aimed at enticing families to visit the Mackay Region during the summer months.
