Region to Benefit from New Tourism Strategy

Securing the continued growth of The Mackay Region’s vibrant tourism industry was the focus of April’s Mackay Tourism Ltd. Board Meeting held on Thursday, at the Mackay Visitor Information Centre.

Mackay Tourism has celebrated a number of successes this past year, recording five successive quarters of visitation growth. For year ending December 2017, domestic and international visitation injected $382.7 million and $13.7 million respectively into The Mackay Region’s economy.

Board Directors met on Thursday to discuss and finalise the Mackay Regional Tourism Business Strategic Plan. This Strategic Plan was first formulated in 2017, and now updated to 2018, sets in motion the necessary steps to develop Mackay Tourism Ltd. as a leading tourism organisation.

Following five successive quarters of visitation growth, this increased demand has facilitated the implementation strategies to increase investment into the regions tourism industry. Mackay Tourism is also active in raising and promoting the environmental credentials of the organisation and the industry.

Mackay Tourism General Manager, Tas Webber, was confident that with these strategic plans implemented, The Mackay Region will become a ‘must visit’ destination that showcases memorable nature experiences to the world.

“Tourism already generates significant investment and jobs to The Mackay Region and the 2023 vision outlined in this Strategic Plan, positions Mackay Tourism as the leading Regional Tourism Organisation. Tourism will be an integral pillar of our local economy and an example to our region of the highest standards of industry and community engagement” stated Mr Webber.

Chair of Mackay Tourism, Rob Porter, echoed Mr Webber’s optimism declaring, “this Strategic Plan is exciting not just for Mackay Tourism and its members, but for the regions residents, who take great pride in what The Mackay Region has to offer the world”.

The Strategic Plan is set to be reviewed annually by the Mackay Tourism Board and Staff. Mackay Tourism members play an important role in shaping the future of tourism in The Mackay Region. For more information about getting involved visit; https://www.mackayregion.com/corporate/membership.
