Mackay may be best known for its sugar, but stroll through the city centre and look up, and another story reveals itself in bold geometric facades, stepped parapets and elegant period lettering. Keeping that story alive is the passion of the Sugar City Art Deco & Modernism Society, a local group of heritage lovers dedicated to celebrating and preserving the city's remarkable architectural legacy.

Mackay's Art Deco character was born from disaster. Fires in 1915 and 1916 tore through Victoria Street, and the devastating cyclone of 1918 destroyed most of the city's buildings. As Mackay rebuilt, buoyed by a thriving sugar industry and growing population, it embraced the most fashionable style of the day. The result is one of the finest collections of Art Deco buildings in Queensland, from the Ambassador Hotel to Chaseley House and the former Pioneer Shire Council Building.

The Sugar City Art Deco & Modernism Society believes these buildings are far more than pretty facades.

Through its members' enthusiasm and local knowledge, the group encourages residents and visitors alike to see Mackay with fresh eyes, appreciating the craftsmanship and history hiding in plain sight, and ensuring this unique heritage is valued and protected for generations to come.Tours
