Support Locals Affected by Bushfires
Mackay Tourism is calling on the Mackay community to support tourism operators affected by the recent bushfires.
To help tourism operators get back on their feet, locals are encouraged to take a day trip to the affected townships including Eungella, Broken River, Pinnacle, Finch Hatton, Carmilia and Sarina Beach.
General Manager of Mackay Tourism, Tas Webber said despite the devastating fires, the region still had an abundance of beautiful attractions to explore.
“The Mackay Region offers so much natural beauty, incredible fishing and spectacular wildlife encounters”.
“Areas like Cape Hillsborough, the Northern Beaches and the Isaac Region’s Mining Trail have been untouched by bushfires and are still very much open for business”, said Mr. Webber.
“As safety assessments are undertaken, more national parks and walking tracks will be opened across the Pioneer Valley and around the region”.
“Pinnacle and Finch Hatton are up and running again, so what better way to support local tourism operators, than watching platypus play in crystal clear rainforest streams, relaxing with a coffee from the Church Café, or enjoying a famous Pinnacle Pie”.
Owners of the Pinnacle Family Hotel, Karen and Andrew Guthrie, said they were hopeful that locals and visitors would support Pioneer Valley businesses to reactivate tourism.
“The bushfires have presented a significant challenge to businesses across the Pioneer Valley”.
“It’s been a very tough week, but the way the community has come together and responded is incredible”.
They continued, “many businesses, including ours have hosted people evacuated from the fires, and kept our brave firefighters well fed”.
“We had a large group today of firefighters from Western Australia, who will soon depart to fight fires elsewhere in the state”.
Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie said, “we are hopeful this incredible community spirit can continue and as many locals as possible can journey to the reopened bushfire affected areas and help local businesses recover”.
To raise money for the bushfire relief effort, fundraising nights will be this Friday at the O’Shea’s Hotel featuring country music legend Damien Agius, and the following Friday night at the Pinnacle Family Hotel. Details are available on the Pinnacle Family Hotel Facebook page.
Information on National Park closures is available on the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service website.
