Top tourism operators on show in Queensland
Five Mackay Region tourism operators will represent the region at the 2017 Queensland Tourism Awards on Friday, hosted by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC).
The Sarina Sugar Shed, Ibis Mackay, The Feathered Nest – Luxury Wildlife Retreat, Mackay Resort Motel and The Old Station Teahouse join more than 160 businessses nominated across the state in this year's awards, which are presented by Queensland Airports Limited in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland.
The Sarina Sugar Shed and Ibis Mackay have previously been successful at the Queensland Tourism Awards, as well as Australian Tourism Awards.
Sarina Sugar Shed celebrated its 10th anniversary last year and is nominated for an impressive four categories at the Awards. Coordinator Glenys Mansfield said the facility attracts 16,000 visitors a year.
“Sarina Sugar Shed has consistently produced outstanding products and services for the tourism industry and generated large visitation to our region,” Ms Mansfield said.
“It is one of its kind in Australia and showcases both the culture and heritage of our sugar industry. It produces an amazing array of products on site from local produce of the region.”
It’s the first time entering the Queensland Tourism Awards for The Old Station Teahouse owners Michele and Dwayne Shea, who won Gold recently at the Mackay Region Tourism Awards for Tourism Restaurants and Catering Services.
“We don’t have any expectations. We entered the Queensland Tourism Awards for the experience and I think it’s a really good opportunity to take look at your business, see where you're going and how you're tracking,” Michele said.
General Manager of Mackay Tourism, Tas Webber, said the Awards are a chance for local operators to be recognised for their hard work and success in the industry.
“It’s a great opportunity for operators in The Mackay Region to be recognised alongside some of the state’s best tourism providers.”
“Mackay Region operators have proven time and time again, that they can offer the same high-quality experiences and tourism offerings as any other destination and it’s great to be able to celebrate their hard work and success with them.”
The operators from the Mackay Region are:
- The Sarina Sugar Shed:
- Ibis Mackay
- The Feathered Nest – Luxury Wildlife Retreat
- Mackay Resort Motel
- The Old Station Teahouse
The gala event will be held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre from 6pm Friday, 10 November.
