Tourism Awards close Friday

The spotlight will soon be on the local tourism industry, with the 2017 Mackay Region Tourism Awards set to recognise outstanding achievements in tourism.

This Friday, 4 August will be the closing date for submissions into the region’s key tourism awards, and Mackay Tourism has already received some fantastic entries.

With 16 categories including Excellence in Food Tourism, Tourist Attractions, Festivals and Events, Adventure Tourism and more, the Awards aim to publicly acknowledge and showcase the region’s finest tourism operators.

Last year, the Sarina Sugar Shed made an impact on a local, state and national level, taking out three awards at the Mackay Region Tourism Awards, two Gold and a Bronze at the Queensland Tourism Awards and a Silver at the Australian Tourism Awards.

Coordinator of the Sarina Sugar Shed, Glenys Mansfield, said the business had been successful over a number of years, on a number of different levels.

“Last year at The Mackay Region Tourism Awards, we were recognised not just for our outstanding tourism service, but also for the work that our volunteers do at the Sarina Sugar Shed,” Ms Mansfield said.

“The local awards provide a good lead-up to the state and national awards and we were pleased to be awarded a Silver in the Australia Tourism Awards for Tourism, Wineries, Distilleries & Breweries last year.”
