Camping Permits

Before setting up camp in the Mackay Isaac Region, it’s important to check whether your chosen location requires a camping permit.

Some sites—particularly those in national parks and council-managed reserves—do require advance bookings or permits to help protect the environment and manage visitor numbers.

This page will help you understand where permits apply, how to book them, and how to camp responsibly.

When Do You Need a Permit?

You will need a permit if you’re camping in:

  • Queensland National Parks and State Forests
(e.g. Cape Palmerston National Park, Eungella National Park, and parts of the Isaac Inland forests)
  • Some council-managed or designated reserves
(especially where signage indicates “camping by permit only”)

For most beachside and remote bush camps, permits are not required—but we always recommend checking the local signage or information in advance.

How to Book a Camping Permit

For Queensland National Parks, permits must be booked in advance through the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service:

  • Website: parks.des.qld.gov.au
  • Phone: 13 QGOV (13 74 68)

You can:
• View site availability and camp rules
• Purchase permits for individuals or groups
• Print or save your permit for display during your stay

Some parks have limited spaces—especially during holidays—so booking early is advised.

Permit Fees

Fees vary depending on the location, length of stay, and number of people. As a general guide:

  • $7.25 per person per night
  • $29 for a family group (up to 8 people)
  • Discounts apply for extended stays and concessions

Check the QPWS website for the most up-to-date pricing.

Staying Permit-Free? Still Plan Ahead.

Many free and low-cost campsites throughout the region do not require a permit—but it’s still important to:

  • Check signage at each site
  • Plan for self-sufficiency—some sites have minimal or no facilities
  • Respect local rules—including limits on stay duration, fire use, and pets
  • Leave no trace—always clean up and dispose of waste responsibly
