Nature, Adventure & Magic Moments
Blog written by Teigan Nash
Australia is home to countless incredible places, and this year I made it my mission to explore some that had long been on my list. Topping that list was Mackay Isaac — and wow, it did not disappoint.
Whether you're chasing a peaceful escape into nature or looking to dial up the adrenaline, this region has a little bit of everything. Here’s a look at what we got up to during our unforgettable trip.
Sunrise with the Locals
No visit to Mackay is complete without witnessing the iconic sunrise at Cape Hillsborough. It’s one of those experiences that really stays with you — the golden light rising over the ocean while kangaroos and wallabies hop along the beach is something straight out of a dream (or a tourism ad!). It’s easy to see why this is on so many people’s bucket lists. Standing there in the stillness of morning, camera in hand, watching those Aussie icons graze along the shoreline — it felt surreal.
Where We Stayed
We chose to base ourselves at the stunning Mt Jukes Eco Retreat, a peaceful property tucked away in the natural surrounds. From glamping tents to cosy cabins, there’s something for every style of traveller. What really stood out for us was the setting — you’re immersed in greenery, with fruit trees dotted around the grounds and a crystal-clear stream running along the back of the property. Yes, it was a little brisk for a dip (we visited in winter), but it was totally worth it! Pure serenity.
Adventure Awaits
For those looking to get the heart racing, Mackay has some serious action on offer. We kicked things off at Wake House in town — a wakeboarding park that’s as fun as it is challenging. I’ll be honest, I spent more time in the water than on the board, but the staff were amazing and made the whole experience feel accessible and fun. That moment I finally stood up and glided across the surface? Absolutely electric.
Next up: mountain biking at Finch Hatton. I’m definitely not a seasoned rider, but the network of trails here caters to all skill levels. Whether you’re a first-timer or a full-on downhill enthusiast, you’ll find something that suits. I took it at my own pace, and the scenery made every moment special. Towering trees, fresh mountain air, and that feeling of being completely off the grid — perfection.
Exploring Finch Hatton Gorge
Beyond the bike trails, Finch Hatton Gorge is a must-see. We spent a beautiful afternoon hiking through lush rainforest, taking a refreshing plunge in the rock pools, and enjoying a peaceful picnic in the sun. If you’re planning a visit, my advice is simple: don’t rush it. Give yourself time to breathe it all in — wander, swim, relax. The energy here is something else.
A Festival to Remember
We were lucky enough to time our trip with Between the Tides, a unique beachside festival that blew us away. Picture this: Xavier Rudd playing live as the sun sets over the water, barefoot dancing on the sand, and a sky slowly turning to pink. The festival kicked off with a powerful Indigenous Welcome to Country and featured beautiful workshops, including a chance to create silk scarves dyed with native plants. It was a moving, magical night — a real highlight of the trip.
Chasing Sunsets & Moonrises
As if the mornings weren’t spectacular enough, the evenings gave us even more reason to pause and soak it all in. One of our favourite sunset moments was from the mountain biking trails at Finch Hatton — perched high above the valley with local gourmet treats from Flame Tree Stays (where we were staying at Finch Hatton), we watched the sky light up in gold.
And for something extra special, we caught an incredible moonrise from The Chalet. Sitting in silence, watching the full moon climb above the horizon — it was the perfect way to close out a trip full of wonder, warmth, and adventure.
If it’s not already on your list, trust me — it should be.
