Australia Day in Mackay – 26 January

Australia Day in the Mackay Isaac Region is all about community, connection and celebrating together. Across the region, you’ll find a line-up of free events that bring people outdoors to enjoy the sunshine, share a barbecue and make a few memories along the way.

From beach parties and family fun days to official citizenship ceremonies, there’s something for everyone. Mackay Regional Council and Isaac Regional Council support a range of activities across multiple locations, making it easy to get involved wherever you are.

Event highlights include:

Aquathon at Pioneer Swim Centre – organised by the Mackay Triathlon Club, this is a morning of fun races to get your Aus Day off to flyer.

Australia Day Awards Gala at MECC - A day to say thanks to those individuals or groups that help make our region great and a chance to recognise some local heroes in the Mackay region.

Australia Day at The Nebo Hotel - turn up the fun with live music, and a whole day packed with Aussie-themed food, drinks, and activities.

So whether you’re starting the day with a dip, joining in the festivities, or raising a glass with mates, Australia Day in Mackay Isaac is a celebration of community spirit.

Summer Fishing Season

For keen anglers, summer in Mackay Isaac isn’t just about sunshine… it’s fishing time! This is when early mornings, warm evenings and local fishing spots come together for some of the best action of the year.

Come Feb 1 the net free zones reopen. This is one of the most exciting times on the Mackay fishing calendar and the locals know it. Whether you’re chasing your first barra or a new PB, the action is calling. And for those in region before that, be sure to head to impoundments like Theresa Creek Dam, Teemburra Dam, Kinchant Dam or Eungella Dam where barra can still be targeted during barra closed season (Nov 1 – Feb 1).
