Where the platypus play: a slow escape to Eungella

There’s a certain kind of quiet in Eungella National Park. The kind you notice when the car engine cuts out, the cool air hits you, and time feels like it slows just a little.

This is platypus country. In fact, it’s one of the best places in the world to see them in the wild, especially if you know where to look and where to stay.

A rare kind of wildlife encounter

Tucked high above the Pioneer Valley, Eungella is one of the best places in Australia to spot a platypus in the wild. During mating season, your chances are even better. At Broken River, head down at dawn or dusk and you’ll find a quiet kind of gathering. A short walk along the river and you’ll see people watching the water, knowing they’re in one of the best places in the world to catch a glimpse of one of Australia’s most elusive animals.

Then, with a little patience, it happens: a ripple, a glide, a small splash out of the corner of your eye. Platypus are regularly spotted at Broken River, and while no wildlife encounter can ever be guaranteed, this is about as good as it gets for seeing one in the wild.

Nature doesn’t run to a set schedule, but at Broken River, your chances of a platypus encounter are about as good as they come.

What to do in Eungella (in between sightings)

While the platypus might be the drawcard, it’s not the only reason to linger. Walk the rainforest trails that weave around Broken River, where the canopy filters the light and everything feels a little slower. Stop into the Sky Window and look out across the valley below, where the landscape stretches wide and green, and grab lunch at the historic Eungella Chalet. Stay a little longer and explore the 56km of trails of the Mackay Highlands Great Walk, with everything from gentle rainforest walks to challenging multi-day hiking.

Let the road lead you, winding, misty, and quietly spectacular. Or don’t rush anywhere at all. Eungella has a way of making slow feel like the right pace.

When to go

Platypus can be spotted in Eungella year-round, but the cooler months, especially through winter and into early spring, are when your chances are at their best. Dawn and dusk are your windows. The rest of the day? That’s yours to wander, explore, or simply take it slow.

Top tips

• Spot the signs: look for air bubbles and concentric circles on the water’s surface.
• Platypus are shy and elusive creatures. Try to stand still, remain silent and be patient.
• Don’t give up – they can hold their breath for up to 10 minutes!
• Have your camera ready and binoculars on hand for a closer look.

Take it slow
