Family Vacay Vibes

Six of the best when travelling with the fam

Travelling with the fam doesn’t have to mean colour-coded schedules or rushing from one thing to the next. In the Mackay Isaac region, family holidays tend to move at a better pace. Think wide open spaces, easy wins that keep everyone happy, and the kind of days that unfold as you go.

Here are six of the best spots and experiences that families keep coming back to.

1. Purple Thunder Mackay

When you’re in the mood for something loud, wet, fast and fun.

Out Of Office7

If your family holiday needs a shot of adrenaline, Purple Thunder Mackay delivers in a big way. Their jet boat rides tear along the Pioneer River with 360-degree spins, high-speed turns, sideways drifts and splashy power stops that have everyone hanging on tight for dear life - with a smile on their faces.

It’s fast, fun and just a little bit wild, making it a great option for families with older kids who love a thrill. You’ll see the river from a whole new angle, get thoroughly soaked, and step off buzzing from the experience.

2. Golden Prospecting in Clermont

Hands-on history with a hint of adventure

Out west in Clermont, families can try their luck at gold prospecting and step into a hands-on slice of Queensland history. Golden Prospecting Tours offers an experience that’s as educational as it is fun. With access to private land, a working gold mine, and all the equipment needed, the kids will be shouting Eureka before you know it.

3. Finch Hatton MTB Trails and Pump Track

Ride, rest, repeat

Set against lush rainforest and mountain backdrops, the Finch Hatton MTB Trails are a standout for active families. BYO or hire bikes from nearby Corry Cycles Finch Hatton. The pump track at the Trail Head is great for younger riders. Even if bikes aren’t your thing, the area’s picnic spots and nearby swimming holes at Finch Hatton Gorge make it a relaxed place to spend the day.

4. Bluewater Lagoon Mackay

Marco, Polo anyone?

Easy, central and always popular, Bluewater Lagoon is one of those places families naturally gravitate toward. Free entry, shaded areas, multiple pools and slides mean everyone can find their own fun. It’s an ideal low-effort option that entertains for hours when the weather’s warm.

5. Sarina Sugar Shed

Sweet treats with a side of learning.

A stop at the Sarina Sugar Shed blends tasting, learning and relaxed café vibes into one easy experience. Families can discover how sugar is made, sample locally produced products including rum and liqueurs for the grown-ups, then sit down together for a bite to eat.

Sarina Sugar Shed Tours run daily and are the only such tour in Australia.

6. Platypus spotting at Broken River

Tick an Aussie icon of the list

Platypus Broken River

For a magical family moment, head to Broken River in Eungella National Park. When we say you can spot a platypus here, we mean it. Early mornings or late afternoons give families the best chance to spot platypus in the wild, often right from the viewing platforms. It’s calm, simple and oh so memorable, especially for kids seeing one for the first time. Nearby Eungella Chalet is a great stop in for views of the valley, a quick bite and plenty of room for the kids to run around.
